United States permanent residents (P.R.) may apply for citizenship after five years in permanent resident status (three years if married to U.S. citizen). The P.R. must have been physically present in the U.S. for half of the required period and show continuity of presence. The P.R. must demonstrate that he or she can speak, read and write in English.
